The Portrait Course, Online.
On this course, we are exploring portraits at a more leisurely pace. We will create one portrait over two sessions (three over six weeks).
This time, I am encouraging you to BYOP (Bring Your Own Portrait). Use the time, guidance and materials carved out for you to practice a self-portrait (Perhaps Portrait Artist of The Year awaits you!) or create a portrait of a friend or family member. If you are a complete Beginner, or BYOP does not appeal, I will have differentiated reference images for you to choose from, including the portrait image I will use for my Guides and Demonstrations.
Subjects include:
· Leonardo Da Vinci inspired sketches,
· Illustrative Portrait,
· Contemporary Painting.
Across the six weeks, you will learn how to use a variety of media, including:
· Sketching & Charcoal pencils,
· Watercolour Paint,
· Acrylic Paint.
Online Classes run for two hours and take place on:
Monday Evening, 18:30PM - 20:30PM GMT
6th January 2025 - 10th January 2025.
Purchase your place with Tuition Fee Only or an Artist Kit.
For bespoke kits, or supplementary materials for your own artist toolkit, get in touch via email for a quote.
For Payment Plans, click here for more information, or click here to get in touch and arrange a tailored plan with us.

How is the Course Structured?
The classes will be taught live over Zoom, so please familiarise yourself with how to download and utilise it before the course starts to avoid teething problems.
For the first week, I will send out an email 20 minutes before the class is due to start and 5 - 10 minutes before in the weeks thereafter. This is to allow plenty of time for you to ring, text, or email me for help if you are having any technical issues.
MONDAY - DEMONSTRATION
The main class will take place on Monday Evenings at 6:30pm – 8:30pm, where you will receive a two hour follow-along demonstration.
The weekly tasks will contain differentiated options – Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced & Extension. This allows you to choose which variant suits your own personal experience with the week’s medium.
Armed with guided step-by-step visual resources, you will have all you need to complete the Weekly Task
WEDNESDAY – Q&A SEMINAR
A mid-week optional Q&A seminar will take place on Wednesday evenings, 7pm – 8pm. These seminars are an opportunity for you to check-in with the progress of your Weekly Task and give you the chance to: ask questions, receive further support, check in with your fellow artists and request further demonstrations or guidance to help you complete your artwork.
FRIDAY – TASK SUBMISSION
Once you submit your work on the Friday, you will receive personalised written feedback on your Weekly Task the following week.
You can submit you work by either photographing or scanning it in and emailing it to: brushstrokes.courses@gmail.com.
TUTORIALS
At the end of the course, there will be an opportunity to receive a 30 minute 1:1 Tutorial to discuss the body of work you have created, receive further mentorship on your emerging artistic style and ask any further questions.
Please ensure I have your Zoom email address so I can send out the invitations to the correct email address.
RESOURCES
What Are The Course Materials?
If you have purchased the Tuition Fee only and wish to use your own materials, then I have provided a Shopping List of all materials needed throughout the course at the end of this Welcome Pack.
If you have purchased an Artist Kit, it will be delivered to you 1 – 2 weeks before the start of the course. You may still need to purchase the MISC Extras listed in the Materials List.
For bespoke kits, or if you are missing any materials get in touch using my email at the bottom of this pack to purchase from me directly.
Where Can I Find the Teaching Resources and Reference Images?
All the Teaching Resources & Reference Images for the class will be emailed out before each week on a Thursday morning.
To be sustainable and reduce waste, print outs of all the resources needed for the course will not be provided unless needed.
In previous courses, some students have preferred to use tablets, laptops or have chosen to only print out the reference image or resource they find useful.
Can I Use My Own Reference Images?
Yes, bring your own images or use your own photography, however, please make sure you read through the below Copyright notice.
Artist Studies: You can only use the work of another artist to create a study if they have been deceased for over 70 years. This is Copyright Law.
You must own the copyright license for any found portrait image (this includes photographs of celebrities). If you do not have the copyright permission, you can use the below websites to search for copyright free images to use:

If you do not have access to an alternative device, or printer, please do get in touch and I can arrange to print out the resources in advance and post them out to you before the course begins.
What is your Refund Policy?
· If a course is cancelled by Brushstrokes Courses due to unforeseen circumstances, and cannot be moved, you will be fully reimbursed for any classes that have not been delivered.
· If a student misses a class due to sickness, holiday, or any other reason, no refunds or discounts can unfortunately be given. Course notes, guides and video links will be distributed for missed sessions.
Can I Switch to In-Person?
If you cannot make an online class and are local to Bristol, you are welcome to join the in-person class on Thursday evenings, 6:30pm – 8:30PM at The Kingswood Estate, Bristol (Please enquire as to space availability).
The Course starts each week with the online Monday session, with the in-person on the following Thursday. Please let me know as much in advance as possible if you wish to switch online.
